Flats Craft The Claw

Description:

Dave Skok's Strong Arm Merkin has become a favorite among anglers, thanks to its proven effectiveness. What sets this fly apart is its innovative use of buoyancy and drag, rather than relying on traditional weight, to keep the fly positioned exactly where it's needed. The design of the claw and the meticulous way it's prepared and tied also play a significant role in its performance.

Dave Skok originally ties the fly with large ultra chenille, wrapping it around the bend of the hook and securing the arm and claw in resin to prevent movement. He emphasizes the importance of not being random or sloppy with the angle and straightness of the claw, as this significantly impacts how the fly swims and sinks.

The claw offered here serves as a streamlined alternative to chenille, eliminating the need for resin, glue, or guesswork. It is designed to use drag in the water to maintain a hook-point-up position during descent. This claw is consistently sized, faster to tie, and always dead straight. It honors the ingenuity of Dave Skoks Strong Arm Merkin while providing a more convenient option.

Unlike other claws, this one requires no halves, no gluing (which reduces odor), and no trimming. It folds up during the eat and returns to its original shape every time.
